University Data

The University of North Carolina spends roughly $227 million a year on energy. With this amount expected to increase each year, it is apparent for each institution to create a more sustainable energy future. In October 2009, the UNC system adopted the Sustainability Policy committing the UNC system to lead the State of North Carolina to a more sustainable future.

Below you will find information for each university’s energy conservation initiatives, energy data, and contact information. 

Note: It is not typical to publish the following energy data in such a broad format. This is due to the danger of oversimplifying for purposes of caparison. Comparing energy usage and expenditures across campuses is difficult to do on a apples-to-apple basis. Reasons for this include:

  • More students = more buildings = more energy.
  • Some campuses have higher percentages of on-campus housing.
  • Different building types and their use consume different amounts of energy. Campuses with large amounts of laboratories or hospitals will likely have a higher energy user per square foot.
  • Climate differences can create large energy usage differences, and our campus are set in diverse climate zones. Some campuses have a heavy winter heating load vs. others with a heavy summer cooling load, which likely use different fuels.
  • Energy prices vary across the state. Also, some campuses are on complex demand-pricing schedule, while some operate on a simple fixed rate basis.
